3,000 MT basmati rice at Colombo Port | Quality testing after a year

  • Rice stock imported from Pakistan
  • Stuck at Colombo Port for nearly a year

Around 3,000 metric tonnes (MT) of basmati rice stocks imported from Pakistan that have been stuck at the Colombo Port for about a year are to be tested for quality verifications soon, according to the Ministry of Trade.

This was mentioned by High Commission of Pakistan in Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Policies Co-ordinator Asmma Kamal at a meeting held recently with Minister of Trade Dr. Bandula Gunawardana.

During the meeting, the two countries had held a lengthy discussion regarding the ways and means of using the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (PSFTA) that would be beneficial to both countries.

Accordingly, the Minister said that a Cabinet proposal would be submitted to establish government institutions to check the quality of all imported goods to the country as well as to import rice within the quota of 6,000 MT to Sri Lanka directly by the Government, under the PSFTA.
