Attorney General Dappula de Livera has ordered Acting IGP Chandana D. Wickramaratne to probe an allegation made on social media regarding an illegal grab of properties owned by persons living overseas, by Hambantota Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando and three others.
AG’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne yesterday (02) said, the three others against whom the probe would be conducted besides Fernando are Denister Ajith Balasuriya, Sanith Sanjeewa Weeraratne and Mohammad Nazeerdeen.
The AG has also informed the Acting IGP that while viewing the CCTV footage of an incident, which had been posted on certain social media platforms, it has come to light that bogus land deeds had been compiled on behalf of Fernando by Balasuriya, Jayaratne said.
She added that the AG has also pointed out that Fernando had also allegedly used his own private security firm to trespass the lands. Jayaratne added that the AG has also mentioned in his letter to the Acting IGP that further viewing of the CCTV footage had revealed that a certain group, after having broken the padlocks of a gate at the entrance of a land in Nugegoda, could be seen entering it unlawfully.
She said that hence, the AG has forwarded the digital video disc containing the CCTV footage of the incidents for Wickramaratne’s perusal and he has ordered Wickramaratne to probe the alleged incidents fully and submit a report to him within 96 hours.
