Mirihana: A 53-year-old man has been assaulted to death in the Mirihana area on Wednesday (10) night, the Police said.
The victim was later identified as Self-Employed Professionals’ National Three-Wheeler Association Chairman Sunil Jayawardana, who was a resident of the Kesbewa area.
The Police said that the Mirihana Police at around 6.20 p.m. on Wednesday evening had received information via the 119 hotline of an argument that had broken out between two men, including Jayawardana and several employees of a finance company, at the firm’s premises.
According to reports, Jayawardana had turned up at the said finance company to discuss some matter concerning a leased three-wheeler which belonged to one of his associates.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the heated argument between the two parties had escalated to a brawl, which had eventually resulted in an assault on Jayawardana. He had succumbed to the injuries upon admission to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila.
Eight employees of the finance company in question have been arrested on suspicion over the killing of the three-wheeler union chairman; they have been charged with unlawful assembly and murder.
The eight suspects have been remanded till 25 June.
The Mirihana Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
